Kirstin Chávez headlines the cast in Bizet’s best known opera comique, Carmen. The production comes from Glimmerglass Festival, scenery and costumes originally designed by James Schuette. The opera is based on the 1857 novella of the same name by Prosper Merimee. It was not initially well-received by critics due to its use of realism and subject matter centering on the sensual gypsy Carmen, but quickly found a following and today is beloved for its memorable songs.
Kirstin is joined by Metropolitan Opera Tenor, Adam Diegel as Don José. Diegel returns to San Antonio after performing in 2015’s Madama Butterfly production as Lt. B.F. Pinkerton. Andrea Carroll also joins the cast as Micaela. Carroll is a recent graduate of the Houston Grand Opera Studio and is on the roster at the Vienna Staatsoper. Escamillo will be performed by Ryan Speedo Green, graduate of the Lindemann Young Artist program at the Metropolitan Opera and also joining the roster of the Vienna Staatsoper this season. The children’s chorus will be played by members of the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio
The production will be sung in French with projected English translations.
A pre-opera lecture will be offered beginning an hour before curtain on October 27 and again before the October 29 performance, by San Antonio’s own Dr. Kevin Salfen. This lecture is offered FREE of charge to all ticket-holders!
