OPERA San Antonio is dedicated to expanding our reach to the youth of San Antonio through free outreach programs in local schools. OPERA in Schools provides 20-50 minute presentations FREE to area K-12 schools.

Engaging live performances, paired with interactive slides, guide students as we explore the power and beauty of opera.

I’ve never heard opera before, but it’s all I ever want to hear now.
— Luke, kindergartener at Great Hearts Monte Vista

The complete OPERA in Schools program includes:

  1. Outreach visit to local Elementary, Middle, or High School

  2. Invitation to a Final Dress performance at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts

  3. Access to OSA’s free online Videos & Resources including the “Explore Opera for Kids!” series and worksheets

The school visit serves as a great introduction to opera and is designed to appeal to all students grades K-12. The presentation covers a range of relevant topics including: definition of opera both as an art form and collaboration, common musical terms through exploration of mode, tempo, dynamics, types of singing ensembles and voice types, training to become an opera singer, history of opera, and how composers use music to portray characters within an opera.

Programming can be adjusted to fit school schedule or curriculum needs and can be edited for length when necessary.

Your presentation this morning was BRILLIANT and very engaging. What a wonderful way to introduce opera to children; this is something that is so needed – and this is the way to do it! I suspect many of the parents from today’s presentation will be hearing from their children about how they enjoyed learning about opera today and will be asking if they can go to one.
— Jeremy Brimhall, Director of Education at the San Antonio Symphony
